Coffee in Circulation – Giving Grounds a Second Life!
The “Nierusz Natura” Foundation is launching the project “Coffee in Circulation – a local circular economy hub in Warsaw cafés,” funded by the Veolia Poland Foundation under the “Together for the Region 2026” program.
Every day, Warsaw’s cafés produce large amounts of coffee grounds and other organic waste. Much of it, however, could become a valuable resource — going into compost, urban gardens, or educational activities. Our project aims to show how a circular economy can work locally, simply, and practically.
Together with three Warsaw cafés, we will create small local circular economy (GOZ) hubs. We will carry out waste audits, launch a coffee-grounds collection system, introduce solutions that make sorting easier, and organize 3 open workshops for residents and young people.
We will also produce a practical guide, “GOZ in a Café,” showing step by step how other food-service venues can implement similar solutions. We want at least 100 kg of coffee grounds to be reused instead of thrown away. The project will directly engage around 300 Warsaw residents, and the model developed will later be applicable in other cafés too. Because a circular economy doesn’t have to start with big investments. Sometimes it can start with… a cup of coffee.
The project is funded by the Veolia Poland Foundation.
